10 Steps to a Successful Kitchen Renovation – Kitchen Renovations

  1. Decide what you want doing.  Look at magazines and visit showrooms for ideas.  Remember, one change can make other changes necessary.  For example, changing the cupboards might mean you have to re-tile or paint the walls, or move power points.
  2. Now that you know what you want, find out how much you can get done within your budget.  Talk to family and friends for referrals to good trades people and get quotes for tiling, painting, electrical, plumbing etc.
  3. Have a look in the members directory to find a reputable, reliable and professional cabinet maker that is able to help you with your project or contact the Cabinet Makers Association.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – your CMA member will probably have some great design ideas and know what pitfalls to avoid.  Have you considered space and light for example?
  5. Get a couple of quotes from CMA members.
  6. When comparing quotes make sure you’re not comparing apples with oranges.  Are you being quoted on the  same materials, brands and models?  Make necessary allowances for such differences, and differences in style too.
  7. If you’re finding it hard to choose between cabinet makers, ask for references or ask to see photographs of completed jobs.
  8. Now you’ve made the final decision, contact the CMA member of your choice.
  9. All jobs over $7,500 require a contract by law.  This sets out payments and terms for both parties. Make sure you have a detailed specifications list to ensure you know exactly what you are getting. Find more information about contracts here.
  10. Make sure that any variations are documented and signed off on to avoid misunderstandings later on in the project.
